How School Counselors Help

  • Individual counseling is offered to help students resolve personal or interpersonal problems. Individual counseling is short-term and solution-focused.

  • Classroom lessons to promote social-emotional learning (SEL). SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.

  • Small group counseling provides additional learning experiences, giving children the opportunity to build relationships, practice new skills, and learn through the support of group members. Small group topics vary widely and are determined by data and current need.

  • Consultation with parents and teachers is a critical part of the school counselor's role in advocating for students and helping them succeed.

  • School counselors help locate community resources for parents in search of information or services to help their child at home.
